Motor Accident Check List
-
It is always best to try not to panic – remain calm and try to remember the cause of the car accident.
-
Assess any casualties or injuries – check if you are injured and then check on to the rest of the passengers in your vehicle, if any. Do not move any injured people unless they are in immediate danger from oncoming vehicles.
-
Call emergency services as soon as possible with details of the accident’s location and people involved.
-
Moving your car – if it is a serious motor accident, do not move any vehicles. Use the warning triangles if you are physically capable and it is safe to do so. If it is a minor car accident, pull over as far left as possible to prevent obstruction to oncoming vehicles.
-
Exchange motor insurance details.
Your names, addresses and phone numbers
The address of the owner whose vehicle you are driving, if it’s not your vehicle
Your motor insurance company names and numbers
Your motor insurance policy numbers
Your driver’s license numbers
Your vehicle’s registration numbers
Your car’s year, make, model and colour
You should also take the contact details and driver’s license numbers of those who witnessed the accident. In addition, note the name and number of the on-scene Garda.
-
Photograph the accident scene – if possible
-
If discussing the specifics of the accident, do not admit liability. You should only discuss details of the motor accident with the Gardaí or your motor insurance company or your broker.
-
Take your time before driving off
